RAPP-ID: Rapid Point-of-Care diagnostics for infectious diseases

EU IMI project: CORDIS (RAPP-ID)

Excellent care for people with suspected infections involves rapid diagnosis and treatment. Diagnostic methods often take at least two days to produce results, which is too slow to help clinicians. Rapid detection of bacteria, fungi, mycobacteria and differentiation from viral pathogens would improve treatment outcomes by guiding decisions at the time and place where they are taken.

Aims and objectives

RAPP-ID develops a Point-of-Care Test (POCT) for rapid detection of bacteria, mycobacteria, fungi, viruses and host biomarkers: in hospital patients in less than 2 hours and for outpatients in less than 30 minutes. The platforms also determine resistance to antimicrobial drugs. Research focuses on pathogens and biomarkers involved in:

  • Tuberculosis (TB)
  • Lower Respiratory Tract Infections (LRTI), including Community-Acquired Pneumonia and Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia
  • Blood Stream Infections

The RAPP-ID Consortium is a public-private partnership composed of 5 EFPIA member companies, 9 academic partners and 4 SMEs.
